The Emmy’s Predictions: Outstanding Comedy Series

The Emmys are approaching, and you know what that means, lots of your friends and coworkers expressing their expert opinions on which show should win in each category. You may not know us IRL, but The Overthinkers are everywhere, including office water coolers, eager to overshare our thoughts.

So here are my brief predictions, and upsets, for the biggest Emmy categories.

Outstanding Comedy Series:

Atlanta, Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Veep

Veep and Modern family have a strong track record with winning best comedy awards, but not this year! Black-ish had its best season yet. It was funny, thought provoking, and relevant to today’s issues. I actually sat down to watch new episodes of Black-ish as they aired, which I rarely do for ABC shows. However, Atlanta was also one of my favorite shows of the year. Donald Glover’s show is ridiculous, and all too real. I found myself laughing in one episode, and devastated in the next. He really didn’t pull punches with Atlanta, and it deserves recognition. I predict Atlanta will take the Best Comedy Emmy home.

Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series:

Pamela Adlon “Better Things,” Jane Fonda “Grace and Frankie,” Allison Janney “Mom,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus “Veep,” Ellie Kemper “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish,” Lily Tomlin “Grace and Frankie”

Really, two nominations for Grace and Frankie? I like it, but not that much. I am really disappointed in the lack of diversity in this category as well. Who decided Issa Rae from Insecure wasn’t worthy of a nomination? That show is GOLD. I want Tracee Ellis Ross to win, but Louis-Dreyfus has won in this category for the last five years, so I predict she will take a sixth home.

Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series

Anthony Anderson “black-ish,” Aziz Ansari “Master of None,” Zach Galifianakis “Baskets,” Donald Glover “Atlanta,” William H. Macy “Shameless,” Jeffrey Tambor “Transparent”

I have a lot of feelings about this category. Jeffrey Tambor has won in this category for the past two years, and William H. Macy is consistently the only member of Shameless to receive a nomination. After seven seasons,  I think Shameless should be considered a drama, seeing as Frank is the only comical character in the entire series. In my heart I want Donald Glover to win. Yes, Atlanta was that good. However, I predict Tambor to win.

Who do you predict to win in each category?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out my predictions for the drama categories.
