San Diego Comic Con rocked this weekend, giving us our first glimpses at some huge, upcoming films and shows. Here’s just a few of them:
First up, the next addition to the MCU has everybody’s favorite mythological Avenger, Thor, doing his best to prevent the goddess of death Hela from unleashing the end of the world, Ragnarok. Man this trailer’s cool. It’s got sweet synth music, vibrant alien worlds, and Jeff Goldblum. Cate Blanchett looks like she’s having a blast as the villainous Hela. The space stuff looks like it’s taking more than a little inspiration from Guardians of the Galaxy, and that’s just fine.
A confession: I am not a fan of the film universe DC has set up for itself. I hate Man of Steel and couldn’t get through Batman VS Superman. But Wonder Woman was encouraging. And so is this trailer. There’s levity. The superheroes are actually being superheroes instead of giant mope machines. There’s a color other than grey or black. Personally, I think jumping straight into a team up movie after three films is a mistake, but this trailer’s got me cautiously optimistic.
Ready Player One
We got our first look at Stephen Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. There’s a ton of stuff going on in this trailer. In about thirty seconds there’s about fifty different cameos from all of pop-culture, everything from Freddy Krueger, Duke Nukem, and Stephen King’s Christine, to the DeLorean from Back to the Future, to the Iron Giant. It’s bonkers. Now hopefully the movie is more than just impressive visuals and a pop-culture Where’s Waldo, because I’m certainly intrigued by what we’re shown here.
Stranger Things 2
This is the year of sweet 80’s throwbacks apparently. Season two of last year’s break out hit, Stranger Things, has me really excited. The first season was a great adventure/sci-fi/horror mash-up, and it looks like all those great elements are being expanded in the second season. We get another glimpse of the new monster, which is some kind of sky-dwelling Cthulhu squid thing made of darkness. And Eleven lives! October 27th cannot come fast enough.
Westworld Season 2
YEEEESSS. YEEEEEEEEEESSSS. They’ve been shooting for like two weeks, how did they even have enough footage for a trailer? There are robots, there are cowboys, there are robot cowboys, there are philosophical discussions while cowboys fight robot cowboys. YEEEEEEEEEESSSS.
